2 What Interactions Occur Within Communities?
Community Interactions – any interaction that occurs between living species in an ecosystem Can have powerful effects on the ecosystem

3 Types of Interactions 1. Competition
Organisms of the same or different species compete for a resource Ex: water, nutrients, light, mates, space Two insects feeding on the same plant

4 Types of Interactions 2. Predation
One organism captures and feeds on another organism Predator/prey

5 Types of Interactions 3. Symbiosis
There are 3 types: mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism A close relationship between 2 species

6 Types of Symbiotic Relationships
1. Mutualism Both species (organisms) benefit Ex: Flowers and insects, coral and algae

7 Types of Symbiotic Relationships
2. Commensalism One organism benefits, the other is not harmed Ex: barnacles on a whale, remoras and sharks

8 Types of Symbiotic Relationships
3. Parasitism One organism benefits, the other is harmed, possibly killed Ex: tapeworms, fleas, ticks, mites Ex: Tapeworms (parasite) living inside a dog (host)
