1 Acids and Bases

2 When we think of the terms “acid” and “bases” we tend to think of chemistry lab acids and bases like: However, we come into contact everyday with these items, at home, at school, at the beach, etc.

3 Acids cause… Lemons to be sour

4 Acids cause… Loss of tooth enamel

5

6 Acids Taste sour When acids and metals react, a salt and hydrogen (H) gas is produced Has a pH value below 7 Are corrosive – destroy other materials

7 Turns blue litmus paper red
Acids Turns blue litmus paper red

8 When added to water (H2O) lose a Proton and form hydrogen ions (H+)
Acids When added to water (H2O) lose a Proton and form hydrogen ions (H+)

9 Bases Taste bitter Feel slippery Don’t react with metals
Strong bases can burn skin

10 Turns red litmus paper blue.
Bases Turns red litmus paper blue.

11 Bases Has a pH value above 7
When added to water (H2O) gain a Proton and form hydroxide ions (OH-)

12

13 pH Testing

14 strengths of acids & bases
refers to how well an acid or base separates into ions in water

15

16 pH scale ranges from 0 – 14 pH < 7 acid pH = 7 neutral
pH > 7 base pH Scale song

17 Universal indicator shows how acidic or alkaline a solution is

18 neutralization reaction between an acid & base produces water & a salt
an ionic compound

19 Review ACID or BASE? tastes sour forms hydroxide ions in water pH= 8 reacts with metals to produce H gas feels slippery turns red litmus paper blue

20 ACID or BASE A reaction between an acid and a base is a __ reaction.
The pH of a neutral solution is __. The products formed when a base reacts with an acid are __ and __. The symbol for a hydrogen ion is __ and the symbol for a hydroxide ion is___.
