Year 10 Biology Individual Project
2
Your task: Identify a project or investigation with biological or environmental theme. Plan and implement project or investigation Write a research report Due Date - Monday 7th September
3
What is an investigation or project?
Investigation - Answers a question Project - The creation of something
4
What should you include in your report:
Aim: What do you want to test? Learn? Discover? Hypothesis What is your prediction of how one variable will affect another? Materials In dot points list the materials required for the project/investigation
5
Report continued... 3. Method Outline the steps you have followed
4. Results May include tables or graphs to record results 5. Discussion Reflect and discuss results in relation to your hypothesis What was observed? What did the results show? How do they compare to your hypothesis and aim? Were your results accurate and were there any errors made? 6. Conclusion Have you tested or proven what was in your aim and hypothesis? How reliable or valid were your results? Is further testing needed? Make clear and logical statements to answer these questions
6
Today: Decide on working in pair or individually
Identify biological investigation or project you will be undertaking Fill in worksheet including aim, hypothesis, materials and method
7
Lesson 2 Discuss famous biological experiments researched
Self reflection: What did you find about the famous experiment? What went well or could be improved? How will this influence your CAT Finalise your Aim, Hypothesis, Materials and Method Present in Keynote or a word document to two other peer groups Peer feedback on project proposals. What potential difficulties may arise in project? How might the group overcome them? Was the information presented easy to understand?
8
Lesson 3 Today you will understand:
Independent and Dependent Variable, and controls Bias
9
Variables
10
Bias
11
Lesson 4 Today you will be able to:
Identify ways to record data in scientific experiments Begin data collection
12
Collecting Data
13
Key terms so far... Variables Independent Dependent Control Bias
Sampling Response Non-response Measurement Data Collection Primary Qualitative (Continuous and Discrete) Quantitative Secondary
14
Today By the end of class: Complete Questions 1-5 page 24 ‘Big Idea’
Commence data collection if possible If you have finished data collection or are waiting for materials... Complete questions 6-8 page 24 ‘Big Idea’ Begin writing report OR finalise poster of famous biological discovery. CAT and Presentations DUE Wednesday 9th September
15
Lesson 5: Today you will: Understand how to analyse scientific results
Finish data collection Begin to record and analyse your results
16
An award winning scientific investigation….
15 year old Victorian student Paige Bebee was announced as the 2015 winner of the Eureka Science Prize. The prize recognises excellence in science communication.
17
How do scientists present their results?
Today Read pages in the Big Idea Complete questions on page 24 Must finish minimum of questions 6-8 THEN Finish your data collection If you have finished data collection... Begin writing report OR finalise poster of famous biological discovery. CAT and Presentations due Wednesday 9th September
18
Lesson 6 Today you will… Understand how to write a discussion
Validity and Reliability Record and analyse results Begin writing reports
19
Discussion: Analyse the data for trends, patterns, and anomalies
Analyse the data for accuracy - design/measurement errors and how significant they are Analyse the method - your design - what worked well, and what changes could be made to improve the validity and reliability next time. (This is where you would discuss variables and bias)
20
Validity and Reliability
Is the extent that the test measures what it claims to measure Reliability: Refers to the consistency of measure
22
Key terms you could include in your reports:
Variables Independent Dependent Control Bias Sampling Response Non-response Measurement Data Collection Primary Qualitative (Continuous and Discrete) Quantitative Secondary Validity Reliability
23
Lesson 7 Today you will: Understand what to write in a conclusion
Finalise reports Finalise famous biological discoveries task Prepare for informal presentation to your peers
24
Writing your conclusion...
Note the four things that you should include in a conclusion while watching this video.
25
Lesson 8 Today you will: Submit all CAT tasks
Present your projects to peers Provide peer feedback
