1 Locating Images in Plane Mirrors

2 Locating Images in a Plane Mirror
Recall: 1) Angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection 2) Incident ray, reflected ray and normal all lie on the same plane.

3 Rules Draw the Incident Ray from the luminous object to the mirror (Solid line) Draw the Reflected Ray using the Laws of Reflection (Solid line) Draw the image lines on the other side of the mirror using a dashed line Draw the virtual image on the other side of the mirror Describe the image characteristics

4 Locating Images using Light Rays

5 Locating Images using Object Image Lines

6 Using object-image lines
Using light rays Using object-image lines The image appears to be the same distance behind the mirror as the object is in front of the mirror. The image is called a virtual image because if you placed a piece of paper at the image location, you wouldn’t see any light.

7 How to locate an Image of an Object
1) Pick at least three points on the object 2) Use object – image lines to make perpendicular lines equal in length. Use a solid line for the object side of the mirror and an dotted line for the image side of the mirror

8 Another property of plane mirrors is that they exhibit lateral inversion which means that the image is flipped horizontally compared to the object.

9 Now you try…….

10 Characteristics of an image
Size – Same size, Larger, Smaller Attitude – Upright, Inverted Location – In front of the mirror, Behind the mirror Type – Virtual image, Real image Size Attitude Location Type

11 Babies
