Name Date Class Period The South and West Transformed The New South (After Reconstruction) What made the South new compared to the old South? What is the difference between the two different economies? What were some of the new industries in the new South? One of the biggest transformations that took place in the south was the change from a single product production economy to a mixed economy. This means that they went from producing strictly cotton to a wide rage of products. These products included textile mills, timber industry, and iron deposits in Alabama and sharecropping.

What are some of these traditions? While many things changed in the south as a result of the end of the Civil War and slavery like the economy, life style, overall living conditions many traditions stayed the same. The South has many traditions during this time many good however, not all, bigotry and racism run ramped in the South.

What kind of rules does White society impose? The reason that these traditions have such an effect is because in the South White society still holds almost all of the land, wealth, and power after the Civil War. This gives them the power to make the rules and White society is not about to give up hundreds of years of power. White society keeps its rule and traditions that keep minorities in the lowest rungs of society, they are kept the poorest people through many different legal methods.

Was this the only group that suffered at the hands of White Society? They employ a number of different methods that include, sharecropping, Jim Crow Laws, terrorism from groups like the KKK (Ku Klux Klan), revoke of voting privileges and others. The answer is no, there is one other group in particular that has suffered as much as the African-Americans in the South and that is the Native Americans in the west.
