1 Do Now:

2 Aim: How did the demand for Asian products drive Western imperialists to seek possession of Southeast Asian lands? Date: January 6, 2017

3 What’s been going on? The Pacific Rim was formed as a result of European powers division and imperialism. South East Asia was part of the Pacific Rim. European powers wanted to take control of these places because of their location on border of the Pacific ocean along the sea route to China.

4 European Powers Invade the Pacific Rim
Dutch Expand Control- The DUTCH East India Company looked for lands in Southeast Asia. The discovery of oil and tin on the islands made them very desirable locations to control. Eventually, the Dutch took control of the ENTIRE Indonesian island and changed its name to the Dutch East Indies. In the early 18th Century, the Dutch East India Company established control over most of the 3,000 mile-long chain of Indonesian Islands. The British established trading ports in Singapore. The French took over Indochina. The Germans claimed Marshall Islands and parts of New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Major Focus: Sugarcane, coffee, cocoa, rubber, coconuts, bananas, and pineapple.

6 The Dutch Settle Mandated rule: The Dutch forced farmers to plant one-fifth of their land in specified crops. (The farmers had to use ⅕ of their land to plant crops that would make the Dutch money.) Unlike the British, a large portion of the Dutch population decided to settle permanently on the islands. They created a rigid class system: The Dutch The wealthy and educated Indonesians The plantation workers

7 British take the Malayan Peninsula
The British saw that they had competition with the Dutch: They used a large, sheltered harbor on Singapore to stop their ships who traveled the India-China trade route. The opening of the Suez Canal and the high demand for rubber and tin made Singapore one of the world’s busiest ports.

8 Colonial Impact Take 7 minutes to answer in complete sentences.
Colonialism brought mixed results in Southeast Asia: Economies grew based on cash crops or goods that could be sold on the world market. Roads, harbors, and rail systems improved communication and transportation but mostly benefited European business. Education, health, and sanitation improved. The region became a melting pot of Hindus, Muslims, Christians, and Buddhists. Take 7 minutes to answer in complete sentences. Let’s REALLY Brainstorm, Stop and Think: Why did the Europeans create the following: Transportation: Communication: Education: Health services: Sanitation: Did the above advancements benefit the Europeans, the natives, or both? Were the above advancements created for the Europeans that were living in the foreign countries (Africa, India, China etc.) or were they created for the natives that lived in the countries? Why do you think so? Why can it be problematic to have multiple religions and cultures in the same land or region?
