Presentation on theme: "How is your body organized?"— Presentation transcript:

1 How is your body organized?
cell The basic unit of structure and function in living things Carry on the processes that keep organisms alive tissues A group of similar cells that perform the same function Types: Muscle, nervous, connective (support) and Epithelial (cover the body surfaces) organs A structure made up of different kinds of tissue A specific job more complex than tissues… ex. Heart pumping blood System A group of organs that work together to carry out major functions Organism The living thing… can be as small as one cell or have many complex organ systems

2 What are the major body systems?
Bones, cartilage, ligaments and tendons Supports body, protects organs, allows movement and produces blood cells Skeletal system Skin, hair, nails and glands Guards against infection and keeps body temperature Integumentary system Skeletal (movement), smooth (moves food) and cardiac (pumps blood) Muscular system Heart and blood vessels transport oxygen nutrients and waste Circulatory system Nose, trachea and lungs bring in oxygen and remove carbon Respiratory system

3 Digestive System Excretory system Nervous system
Mouth, stomach and intestines, break down food, absorb nutrients and remove waste Digestive System Kidney, urinary, bladder, skin remove waste from body Excretory system Brain, spine and nerves control body's responses to change Nervous system

4 Reproductive system Endocrine System FEMALES: ovaries, uterus, vagina
MALES: penis, testes Reproductive system Glands such as the thyroid, pancreas and adrenal Controls growth and development, maintains homeostasis Endocrine System

5 How do you move? Muscles and bones, Ligaments and tendons, work together, making your body move. The nervous system tells your muscles WHEN to move Joint: a joint is a place where two bones come together Bones can only move at a joint otherwise they break

6 How do we breath? Muscles expand your chest allowing air to be pulled into lungs.
Breathing Air moves into lungs Oxygen moves into the blood Oxygen is delivered to cells waste moves into the bloodstream Waste is carried to lungs where it is expelled

7 What systems control body functions?
The nervous system and the endocrine system work together to control body functions Your nervous system responds to a stimulus Hormones are chemical signals sent from your endocrine system
