Ch. 1 Vocabulary Review
2
Procedure The step by step instructions that tell how to perform an experiment.
3
Dependent Variable The outcome of the experiment or the factor you measure to determine whether your hypothesis was correct or not.
4
Kilo Hecto Deka Unit Deci Centi Milli
The order of metric units from largest to smallest.
5
Kilo Prefix used to mean 1000 meters, liters, or grams.
6
Kelvin SI unit for temperature.
7
Hypothesis An “educated” or your “best guess” to the outcome of an experiment.
8
Qualitative Data or observations that usually use the five senses to observe such as color, feelings, touch, appearance, etc.
9
Celsius Unit commonly used by scientists for temperature.
10
Independent Variable The single isolated factor you are testing in an experiment. (hint: “I” change it)
11
Meter SI unit used to measure length.
12
Constant Anything that must be kept the same in an experiment for the test to be valid or fair.
13
Quantitative Data or observations that can be expressed as an amount or number.
14
Control group The part of the experiment that is used for comparison. Does not contain the independent variable.
15
Theory A hypothesis that has a lot of support to back it up and is yet to be disproved.
16
Law Explains how something occurs in nature and seems to always be correct.
17
Liter SI unit used for measuring liquid volume.
18
Gram Unit used in lab to measure mass.
19
Experimental Group Part of the experiment that contains the independent variable. The “test” group.
20
Newton SI unit of weight.
21
Milli Unit that means one thousandth (1/1000) of a meter, liter or gram.
22
Binomial Nomenclature
Two word naming system that includes genus and species names.
23
Species Organisms that are alike and can interbreed to produce fertile offspring.
24
Kingdom The broadest category of the modern classification system.
25
Biogenesis The theory that living things come only from other living things
26
Dichotomous Key Tool used to identify and find scientific names of organisms.
27
Cell Smallest unit of life.
28
Organism Term for any living thing
29
homeostasis Maintaining constant conditions in a living thing.
30
Phylogeny The history of an organism that tells how it has changed over time.
31
Spontaneous Generation
The theory that living things come from non-living things.
