The Muscular System The ability to move is an essential activity of the human body ½ our body weight comes from muscles Consists of over 600 individual muscles. 3 purposes: Body movement Body shape Body heat (maintain temp.)
2
The Muscular System Body movements are determined by three types of muscles
3
Types of Muscle Can be found in the walls of internal organs.
1. Smooth (involuntary) – cannot be controlled by will. Can be found in the walls of internal organs. Organs include: stomach, intestine, bladder, and blood vessels.
4
Types of Muscle 2. Cardiac – control the contractions (pumping) of the heart.
5
Types of Muscle 3. Skeletal (Voluntary) – can be controlled by will. Muscle connected to bone. Controls parts of the skeleton allowing for movement.
6
Functions of the Muscular System
1. Produce Skeletal Movement: the muscles contract in order to pull on the tendons. The tension causes bones to move.
7
Functions of Muscular System
2. Maintains Posture and Body Position -This is caused by tension in the muscles. -In order for this tension to exist, the muscles are in constant activity.
8
Function of the Muscular System
3. Support Soft Tissues -Vocab: Soft Tissue: Organs Muscle is a layer of defense for your soft squishy organs. The bones also provide protection.
9
Function of the Muscular System
4. Guards Entrances and Exits of the Body. -These muscles provide protection and voluntary control for urination and defecation. (this is why you do not pee yourself)
10
Functions of the Muscular System
5. Maintain Body Temperature. -When muscles contract they use energy. This energy releases heat as it is being used. Maintain Homeostasis
11
Functions of the Muscular System
6. Stores Nutrient Reserves. -When muscles break down they release amino acids. These amino acids are tuned into sugar by the liver.
