1 Pattern Evidence Introduction

2 Pattern Evidence Pattern evidence is highly valuable for crime scene reconstruction. Reconstruction Patterns - Pattern evidence that is principally useful to help reconstruct past events. Examples include: blood spatter, glass fractures, fire burn, track and trail patterns.

3 Pattern Evidence Individualization Patterns - Pattern evidence that can potentially uniquely associate the pattern with the item or author responsible for it. Examples include: Fingerprints, handwriting, bullet striations, footwear and tire impressions.

4 Pattern Evidence Many of these patterns cannot be collected and taken to the lab. They must be carefully analyzed at the scene, or well documented with photographs, videos, sketches, or verbal or written descriptions. An expert in a certain field may be called in to give an opinion.

5 Blood Spatter Patterns
When blood falls or is projected, it follows the laws of physics. Blood is a liquid that is more dense and viscous than water. It forms very predictable patterns that allow investigators to infer a lot from the blood spatter at crime scenes.

6 Blood Spatter Patterns
There are 3 main types of blood spatter: 1) Passive - created by gravity alone. Drips, Flows, Pools

7 Blood Spatter Pattern 2) Projected - created by energy transfer.
High, Medium, and Low Velocity impact, Cast off, Arterial spurting, Expiratory

8 Blood Spatter Patterns
3) Transfer/Contact - created when a bloody item comes in contact with another item. Wipe, Swipe
