Summarise the Equality Act and relate it to group training Describe the legal and ethical responsibilities regarding screening, recording information, record-keeping and client confidentiality Describe the scope of practice of a group trainer Explain the insurance requirements when working as a group trainer Explain the importance of having appropriate insurance when working as a group trainer Explain the importance of having appropriate insurance when working as a group trainer, for example, music brands

3 Equality and diversity
Task 1 – timed paired activity – ten minutes Research the Equality Act, with a focus on: The year of the Act. Definition of equality. The nine protected characteristics. Task 2 – paired activity Discuss and come up with examples of when equality of opportunity may relate to the role of a group trainer, and the appropriate action to be taken.

4 Equality Equality is: ‘Enjoying equal rights and being of the same importance’ (Gravells and Simpson, 2016). ‘Ensuring that every individual has an equal opportunity to make the most of their lives and talents, and believing that no one should have poorer life chances because of where, what or whom they were born, what they believe, or whether they have a disability’ (Equalityhumanrights.com, 2016).

5 The nine protected characteristics of the Equality Act
Age. Disability. Gender reassignment. Marriage and civil partnership. Pregnancy and maternity. Race. Religion or belief. Sex. Sexual orientation.

7 All professionals (including exercise professionals and group trainers) and organisations are required to operate within the legal framework of equality when providing services, to ensure that all clients and prospective customers are treated equally, fairly and with the highest standards of customer care, irrespective of differences.

What are the roles and responsibilities of a group trainer? Paired task

9 Role of the group trainer
Customer experience and member retention. Motivating clients and supporting behaviour change. Screening. Referring clients, when necessary. Class programme planning. Supervision and monitoring of clients and the class environment. Health and safety.

10 Scope of practice Read through the case studies on the scope of practice handout. Discuss and decide if: Group task 1. The client is within the scope of practice for a group trainer. 2. If not, who should he/she be referred to?
