3 10-15% of Americans Suffer from some type of eating disorder!

4 Eating Disorders Have No Gender
1 in 10 people with an eating disorder are male Male athletes can sustain a lower body fat percentage without being unhealthy Usually develop eating disorders due to psychological problems Women develop disorders because they cannot sustain a low amount of body fat and remain healthy. Risk developing Amenorrhea Women more commonly develop disorders due to stress and negative emotions

6 Athletes at Risk Athletes are at a higher risk for developing eating disorders Specifically athletes involved in individual sports focused on weight or aesthetics Runners, Wrestlers, Gymnasts, Dancers, Figure Skaters Performance thinness: Trying to achieve the lowest amount of body fat to improve athleticism Appearance Thinness: Act of rewarding an athlete because of how thin they are Team sports focus less on the individual and often promote more of a varying range of body types (ex. American Football)

Need to be the biggest and best to be recognized and make profit Looks are as important as talent in order to make money Female Athletes Pressure by society's view of the “perfect body” Big Breasts, butt, lips, and tiny waist

8 Preventing Eating Disorders
Doctors and Sports Medicine Team Most directly involved with one’s health Can tell the athlete if they can play or not Parents and Administrators Responsible to help educate and support Should know the warning signs Teammates Support system and encouragement
