Use semicolons to join two INDEPENDENT clauses that are not joined by a FANBOY.
Make sure they are CLOSELY related.
– Related: I called Erin; she is my sister-in-law.
– Unrelated: I called Erin; did you notice it was raining this morning?

Use semicolons to separate items in a series that ALREADY have commas in them.
