Agora- huge market where Athenians bought and sold goods and slaves

Reading, math, writing, literature and music
Wrestling and gymnastics to strengthen muscles

Couldn’t own or inherit property
Priestess- female priest
Slaves-
Helped teach children in the home
Jobs included:
Craftsmen, worked on farms, factories and were clerks.
Worst job- silver mines long days and were whipped

8. Spartan Government Power was in the hands of a few people

2 kings- inherited position shared powers
28 other men who were elected by the assembly
60 yrs of age from a noble family
Prepared laws and have final say as to what is a law

9. Spartan Economy Farmed and conquered lands
Helot- is a conquered neighbor who was required to give most of what they grew to Sparta
Little trading for fear of having their government weakened
Used slaves and non citizens to produce needed goods ex. Shoes, knives, cloaks and spears
Iron rods- used as a form of money

10. Education in Sparta
Education=good citizen is someone who has discipline and strength.
7yrs ALL children trained to fight
Girls-wrestled, boxed, gymnastics
7-30 yrs. Boys lived and trained in barracks
Not fed well, taught to steal without getting caught
Goal to be a brave solider and endure pain
20 yrs- take a test of fitness, military ability and leadership skill
30 yrs- now able to live at home and military service will continue.

11. Women and Slaves in Sparta
Look after and guard husband’s property
Own and control own property
Marry another husband if 1st was at war too long
Helots
Treated harshly to discourage revolts
Wars declared on them to eliminate the strongest ones
Marry whomever and whenever
Pass their names onto their children
Sell extra crops once master claimed his share
Buy freedom
