Entry Task Meet with you “killer application” group
You have 20 minutes to finish your App Store page & figure out how you will present You will take notes on the presentations: What is the application? How did it help Europeans become the groups that explored?
3
Competition Europe had lots of small countries fighting one another for dominance & control. This competition inspired them to gain advantage through conquest and taking over lands that were outside European control
4
Science by the 1600s European Isaac Newton was changing how we think about science forever The Scientific Method separated the church and the government and fostered an education system based on what we call today scientific inquiry With modern science, Europe pushed the boundaries of many fields from education, to warfare, and technology.
5
Innovation Europe’s rate of innovation after the Middle Ages skyrocketed the Printing press changed collective learning throughout Europe & then the rest of the world designed ocean-going ships capable not only of sailing the high seas anywhere but also carrying large weapons like cannons
6
Ideology Most European men who sailed to the Americas were ambitious & could only rise in social standing by marrying into a wealthy family or by warfare. Europeans also treated natives as part of "prehistory" - thinking that the natives were people who had been isolated and cut off from humanity. These ideologies allowed for the European conquest of lands without guilt
7
Tactics Nations of the Silk Road were remarkably tolerant & coexisted to mutual benefit. Asian countries had a culture that encouraged collaboration. Most trading ships didn’t even carry weapons. Europeans had a practice of boarding ships with intent to harm, capture and even kill the sailors. The Europeans burned the ships that didn’t “play along” & they confiscated cargo. Europe fought dirty and it was very successful
8
Pluralism a diversity of views, it is accepted that there are multiple ways to do something in Europe there were many smaller states, no one power, government or king could monopolize things. If a ruler didn’t allow something, there was always the option of moving to another state in Europe that did give them the freedom to pursue their interests.
