6 Looking at an exemplar... In your group, read the news report “School Team Qualifies for Finals” What do you notice about the features and components of this news report? Use a highlighter and/or make notes in the margins to indicate what you notice. School Team Qualifies for Finals

7 Eastview Secondary School faced off against Meadowbrook High School on Saturday, March 11th in the Central City Ontario Regional Basketball playoffs. Both teams had very successful seasons and this was expected to be a great semi-final but only one team could win and the Eastview Eagles came out According to John Singh, longtime coach of the Eagles, victory didn’t come without hard work and dedication. “So many of my players worked through lunchtime and after school practices, giving up social activities, extracurriculars, time with family, and had to balance study time with a busy basketball schedule.” Such sacrifice truly proves the players’ extreme commitment to the sport. School Team Qualifies for Finals

8 To many members of the team, it was far more than an after-school sport. “This team represents four years of working together as a team. We have grown up together and this brings us one step closer to our dream of winning the provincial title.”, Sam Peters, a starting point guard said in a post-game interview, “That’s why this game is so important to us.” The Eagles started off slowly in the match, with the Meadowbrook Lions taking the lead, 22-14, for the first half of the game. But the Eagles stepped up, pulling off some gravity-defying shots and an amazing slam dunk by Ahmed Mubhar. The Eagles’ win means they move on to the provincial finals scheduled for Friday this week. “The competition will be more fierce,’’ admits Coach Singh, “but we’ve worked hard for this and I believe in this team.” The final game takes place on March 13th at Sinclair College with tip-off at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5.00 and are available at the door.
