B. What was the United States’ stance on the war during the early years?
Although President Roosevelt denounced the Axis Powers, the U.S. followed a strict policy of isolationism: abstention from alliances and international politics. During the 1930’s, the U.S. implements neutrality acts, refusing to take sides in European conflicts.

However, FDR felt that the U.S. stance of isolation actually encouraged Axis aggression. Why? As the war progressed, the Untied States began supplying food, ships, planes, and weapons to the British.

On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor. 350 – Damaged or destroyed aircraft 18 – damaged or sunk ships >3,500 Americans killed or wounded

On the same day, the Japanese attacked the Philippines and later several other islands in the Pacific. By spring 1942, almost all of the Pacific had fallen to the Japanese.

Japan’s goal: to free the Pacific of Western control, obtain resources, and destroy the United State’s Pacific fleet of ships. Prime Minister Hideki Tojo: military dictator who thought that “lightning” attack on U.S. would force FDR to accept Japan’s control of the Pacific. Read sources:

U.S. response: Pearl Harbor unified American opinion of involvement in WWII. The U.S. joined the allies and China against Japan. Hitler’s response: feeling that the U.S. could not fight a war on two fronts, declared war against the U.S. four days after Pearl Harbor.
