CARRY OUT THE NATION’S LAWS ISSUE EXECUTIVE ORDERS: RULE OR COMMAND THAT HAS FORCE OF LAW APPOINT CABINET MEMBERS AND OTHER OFFICIALS

4 PRESIDENT AS CHIEF DIPLOMAT
DEALS WITH FOREIGN COUNTRIES APPOINTS AMBASSADORS: REPRESENTATIVES OF U.S. SENT TO OTHER COUNTRIES MAKES TREATIES

5 PRESIDENT AS COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF
HAS FINAL AUTHORITY OVER ALL MILITARY MATTERS ONLY THE PRESIDENT CAN ORDER SOLDIERS INTO BATTLE WAR POWERS ACT (1973): PRES. MUST NOTIFY CONGRESS WHEN TROOPS ARE SENT INTO BATTLE, MUST RETURN IN 60 DAYS UNLESS WAR IS DECLARED

6 Legislative Leader President can propose legislation in his annual State of the Union Address Can appeal directly to the people Can either approve or veto legislation Appoints officials who carry out the law

7 Party Leader President is automatically the leader of his political party He has no special powers, but does try to help his party by appointing party members to positions and helping members running for office

8 Judicial Leader President appoints judges to the Supreme Court and other federal courts President may grant a pardon, a reprieve, or amnesty

9 Chief of State As Chief of State, the President represents all 50 states and is a symbol of the U.S. government
