Delian League- Defensive alliance between city-states to protect them from outside attack.
Sparta did not join. Caused other city states to rely on Athens for many things (coins, trails, permission to trade) Athenian Empire.

Pericles- main leader of Athens during Empire.
He built the Parthenon-temple to Athena, 5 mile walls from Athens to the sea. Art, philosophy, literature flourished.

Peloponnesian War (431-404 B. C. E
Peloponnesian War ( B.C.E.)- War between Athens + allies and Sparta + allies. 404 B.C.E.- Athens surrendered to Sparta.

Sparta set up an oligarchy.
Overthrown by a revolt and Athenians set up a democracy. Athens was never as strong again.

After Peloponnesian War
Greece lost sense of unity. Sparta ruled Greece harsh rule angered city-states. 371 B.C.E.- city-state Thebes overthrew Sparta. 338 B.C.E.- Philip II of Macedonia conquered Greece. Philip II of Macedonia
