WARM UP When you think of the word ‘slavery,’ what comes to mind? Bullet point some terms/words.

BEFORE WE GO ON… Slavery is bad. All of slavery is bad. No one should ever be a slave. It’s inhumane and terrible. I am not saying that slavery is good. However, certain forms of slavery are better than other forms of slavery. The Americas had the worst slavery.

CHATTEL SLAVERY (the worst)
Chattel = personal property Think “cattle” Taking one group of people from their homeland to another place TERRIBLE AND AWFUL Zero rights, lots of abuse Usually ‘others’ – different races or religions Conditions on the middle passage: male slaves were chained together, lots of death, disease, Separating families people are treated as the chattel (personal property) of the owner and are bought and sold as if they were commodities
