3 COMPARE & CONTRAST SETTING & EVENTS
I love doodlebugs. Some people call them roly- poly's or pill bugs, but I call them doodlebugs. You can find them under rocks or logs. I love watching them curl up into balls to protect themselves. Did you know that doodlebugs have seven legs? They aren’t insects. We really shouldn’t call them bugs at all! Sometimes called the “giant pill bug,” the giant isopod is from the same class of animals as shrimp and crabs. It has the same segmented body and hard outer shell as the tiny pill bug. But the giant isopod can grow over 16 inches long. Its size helps it survive the strong ocean pressure. My Doodlebug Hobby The Giant Pill Bug

4 COMPARE & CONTRAST: HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT?
Think about the topic of each passage. “My Doodlebug Hobby” is about a doodlebug. “The Giant Pill Bug” is about the giant isopod. Think about the reason each author has for writing the passage “My Doodlebug Hobby” tells a personal story. “The Giant Pill Bug” is a science article. Do they persuade, entertain, inform, or explain? Think about the tone of each passage “My Doodlebug Hobby” uses positive, informal tone to describe an interest in doodlebugs. The “Giant Pill Bug” presents facts about the giant isopod in a neutral, formal tone. Therefore, these passages have different topics, purposes and tones!

5 COMPARE & CONTRAST: HOW ARE THEY SIMILAR?
HOW ARE BOTH OF THESE STORIES SIMILAR? THEY ARE BOTH ABOUT BUGS
