2 Preamble What were the goals of the constitution as outlined in the Preamble? What were the framers of the constitution referring to when they stated, “General Welfare”?

3 Governmental Structure
To prevent government from becoming too powerful the constitution divided the powers of the government between the Federal and state Reserved Powers: Powers given to the states only Ex: Set up education systems Delegated Powers: Powers given to the Federal government only Ex: Declaring war Concurrent Powers: Powers that both state and federal government hold at the same time Ex: Collecting Taxes

5 Separation of Federal Powers
Three branch system of Government Legislature, Executive and Judicial System of checks and Balances Each branch has the power to check or stop other branches’ actions Executive Branch (President) can veto laws passed in Congress Legislative Branch (Congress) can overturn vetoes by passing laws by 2/3 majority in both houses Judicial Branch (Supreme Court) can declare acts of the executive and legislative branch unconstitutional
