PRETERITE OF –AR VERBS

The preterite tense is one of the two PAST tenses in Spanish.
1. I run 2 miles today. (present) 2. I ran 2 miles yesterday. (past) There are 2 simple steps to conjugating verbs in the preterite: 1. 2. Drop the -AR Add the appropriate ending

Here are the endings for regular –AR verbs in the preterite:
(yo) é (nosotros) amos (tú) aste (vosotros) asteis (Usted) (él) ó (ella) (Ustedes) (ellos) aron (ellas)

EJEMPLOS: nadar (yo) caminar (ellos) ganar (Ana) nadé caminaron

-AR preterite BOOT VERBS do not change!!
merendar (eie) : tú probar (oue) : mis amigas merendaste probaron

Verbs that end with –CAR, -GAR, -ZAR will change in the YO form
qué gué cé Tocar (yo): Llegar (yo): Cazar (yo): toqué llegué cacé

Here are some common phrases that indicate the PRETERITE:
ayer yesterday anoche last night anteayer day before yesterday pasado last/past Esta mañana this morning Esta tarde this afternoon
