8. Disclaimer
That is not to say that you HAVE to stay in the same tense for an entire essay or story - but you do need to be aware of where you are changing the verb tense.
Usually you do this at paragraph breaks and for a very specific purpose - like when you change topic or need to talk about a different aspect of your topic.
