How to Integrate Quotes in Literary Analysis
A Simple Guide
8
Quote only words, sentences, or passages that are powerful.
9
When you refer to a text, you have to write about it in the present tense.
Example Golding writes that “(t)hey assured Simon that everything was a bad business.”( 151) Note: it’s “writes” not “wrote”, even though he wrote it in the past. The reason we do this is because texts never age, authors do. Present Tense

You Do the Work Do not rely on quotations to do the work for you.
You must always follow a quotation with commentary. Never end a paragraph with a quotation! You Do the Work

Quotations should fit into your argument
Quotations should fit into your argument. If punctuation, pronouns, or verb tenses do not flow with your own words, paraphrase or make minor changes so it fits into your own sentence. Any change you make to a quotation needs to be surrounded with (brackets). Make Changes
