1 Applying Archimedes Principle

2 Today’s Essential Question ? ? ?
Which factors determine Buoyancy?

3 Worlds Biggest Cruise Ship
Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-Class vessel, Harmony of the Seas, is currently the world’s biggest cruise ship.

4 Worlds Biggest Cruise Ship
With a gross tonnage of 226,963 GT (internal volume of a ship), Harmony of the Seas has a length of m and maximum beam of 66m.

5 How Big is the Harmony ?

6 Also called an Upthrust.
How does it Float?  Buoyancy is an upward force exerted by a fluid that opposes the weight of an immersed object. Also called an Upthrust.

7 Buoyancy: Fb = pgV Transcribe the above formula for Buoyancy into sentence format. A buoyant force is equal to the density of a fluid (p) times the gravitational constant (g) times the volume of the displaced fluid. Now write a sentence explaining how you will find the buoyant force needed to make a large ocean cruise ship float. You will have to find the density of water (marine) You will have to know the gravitational force (9.8 m/s/s). You will have to find the volume of water being displaced.

8 Use Fb = pgV to find Buoyancy
Fb = density of marine water times gravitational force times the displacement (the ships weight) By Archimedes principle, the displacement tonnage that a ship creates is equal to the ship's weight. Fb = g/cm³ x 9.8 m/s/s x 226,963 GT (internal volume of a ship) = x 226,963 = 2,284,291 Newtons (approx. 9.8kg = 1 Newton) = 22,386,051 kg

9 Fb = pgV Fb (the buoyant force) is also dependent on the densities of objects. The less density (mass/volume) an object has, the more buoyant force it creates. (Same masses)

10 Summary Use scientific factors discussed today as well as any prior knowledge you have to explain how it is possible for large ships to float. Large ships float because engineers design them to be less dense that the water they are floating in. This requires minimizing the mass (weight) and maximizing the volume (size) in order to increase the ships buoyant force. If the boat weighs less than the maximum volume of water it could ever push aside (displace), it floats.

11 “If the boat weighs less than the maximum volume of water it could ever push aside (displace), it floats”. Weight of the Boat > Weight of the volume of water being displaced. For Example: A freshwater sailboat has a maximum displacement of 7,200m³. What is the maximum load weight the boat could handle before sinking? (hint: water weighs approx. 3.75kg/m³)

12 Today’s Essential Question ? ? ?
Why do some objects float, while others do not? Buoyancy !
