1 Rounding Mixed Numbers

2 Method: Look at the following mixed fraction.
4 2/3 Approximate the fractional part to the nearest whole number. (Less than ½ round down. ½ or greater, round up.) 2/3 is closer to 1 whole thing than zero 1/2 of 3 (the denominator is 1 ½. Since 2 (the numerator) is equal to or greater than 1 ½ then 2/3 is closer to one than zero. Add that whole number to the original whole number in the mixed number. 1 + 4 = /3 rounds up to 5

3 Example: 4 ¾ - Round the fractional part
Example: 4 ¾ - Round the fractional part. 3 (numerator) is more than half of 4 (denominator), and hence ¾ is greater than half of 4. 3/4 approximated as 1. The mixed number is approximated as = 5. Answer: 5

4 Estimate the following numbers
1.) 3 2/19 2.) 4 7/8 3.) 12 5/12 4.) 8 5/9 5 3 9 12

5 Estimate the answers 13 ft x 10 ft = 130 sq. ft.
Mr. Tumminello is building a dog area in the backyard for his dog Scully. The length is 12 2/3 ft. and the width is 9 ½ ft. About how many square feet is the dog area? A blanket is 8 1/7 ft. wide by 10 3/8 ft. long. What is the approximate area of the blanket? 13 ft x 10 ft = 130 sq. ft. 8 ft. x 10 ft. = 80 sq. ft.
