Recall Molecule: when two or more atoms join together (ex O2) Compounds: Two or more different elements chemically combined to form a new substance (ex. NaCl – sodium chloride, table salt) Some of these are small, just a few atoms, some molecules are very large.

Biomolecules They are often called macromolecules because of their large size. They are also called polymers because they are made from identical or similar building blocks strung together (monomers).

Biomolecules Dehydration reaction builds long polymers out of multiple monomers Hydrolysis breaks a polymer into the monomers

Carbohydrates Sugar molecules (saccharide)
Monosaccharides are single sugars that can be combined to form disaccharides and polysaccharides

Lipids are water insoluble (hydrophobic, or water-fearing) compounds
are important in long-term energy storage contain twice as much energy as a polysaccharide

Proteins Proteins are involved in nearly every dynamic function in your body very diverse, over 10,000 different proteins, each with a specific structure and function, in the human body Proteins are composed of differing arrangements of a common set of just 20 amino acid monomers
