3 ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY Sets forth the principles that govern the use by customers of the Web-based products and services provided by ISI Unless the stated intent of a file is for it to be modified, your personal document files are of course exempt from this policy Illegally using any computer and/or the university network to access the files/resources of any computer/account, which you are not authorized to use, whether here, or at remote locations around the world is prohibited Theft of most computer hardware is a felony offense punishable by up to 5 years in jail and up to a $10,000 fine. 5 SOFTWARE COPYRIGHT LAWS
Created on or after January 1, 1978, subsists from its creation and, except as provided, endures for a term consisting of the life of the author and seventy years after the author’s death. The owner of copyright has authority to do any of the following under Exclusive rights, which are reproduction, modification, distribution, public by sale, public performance, and public display rights, in copyrighted works under section 106. Copyrightable works enter the public domain if the copyright owner grants the work to the public domain. Although copyrights attaches upon fixation, you cannot actually sue someone from infringing benefits your copy right until you register your work with the U. S. Copyright Office. Copyright protection subsists in accordance with title 102, original work of authorship fixed in any tangible medium of expression, not known or later developed, from which they can be perceived, reproduced, or otherwise communicated.

7 SOFTWARE PIRACY Commercially licensed software can be considered a felony offense punishable by up to 10 years in jail and by a fine of up to $250,000 Not uniform within a country; it varies from city to city, industry to industry and demographic to demographic Unauthorized copying or distribution of copyrighted software. If you make more copies of the software than the license permits, you are breaking the law The roots of software piracy may lie in the early 1960s, when computer programs were freely distributed with mainframe hardware by hardware manufacturers (e.g. AT&T, Chase Manhattan Bank, General Electric and General Motors).

9 Software Purchasing Agreement
Licenses acquisition allows companies the rights to market software solutions. License systems are required to manage and monitor license use within a legit customer site. Some copyright owner use End-user licensing agreements in an effort to circumvent limitations the applicable copyright law places on their copyrights. All Software is subject to the license terms. The copyright laws and treaties protect the Software.

11 SUGGESTIONS As educators, make certain the use is for education, and used in a non profit setting. As educators, make certain copies are legally obtained prior to using. Use factual information, but when necessary, creative works can be used to examine points or a basis for commentary or criticism. As educators, make certain the copyright is documented and you have the complete source of citation.
