1 Lesson 070 Learning Goal: You should be able to…
Identify the characteristics of Physical and Chemical Properties Physical and Chemical Changes Success criteria: Can you … Compare and contrast between Physical and chemical properties Physical and chemical changes

2 Vocabulary for physical properties, chemical properties, physical changes and chemical changes
Solubility element compound mixture luster malleable density sonorous ductile conductivity (Heat and electricity) See title for 4 terms gas Liquid solid exothermic endothermic energy precipitate reactant product

3 Write To Think 070 LIST at least FOUR characteristics of a chemical reaction. LIST at least FOUR physical properties of the chemical known as ‘water’: H2O What are the differences between a physical change and a chemical reaction?

4 Chemical change or reaction (CR)
A chemical change or REACTION happens when matter is combined or recombined and becomes a new chemical. It usually looks different physically AND its atoms are joined together in new ways. It DOES change the matter into something completely different and has very different properties. You CANNOT usually get the same matter back that you started with. There is an energy change when a reaction occurs.

5 Physical properties demo (PP)
Physical properties are the characteristics of matter that often can be detected with your senses or measured. They don’t change the matter into something completely different or new. It’s a feature or a descriptor. They are used to identify what matter it is. Copper … Metal Melt and boil points Color Hardness Density Solubility Malleable Flexible Conduct heat Conduct electricity

6 Physical change demo (PC)
A physical change happens when the matter is altered BUT is still the same chemical. It looks different physically BUT its atoms aren’t joined to anything new. It doesn’t change the matter into something completely different. You can usually get the same matter back quite easily. Ice water melts to liquid water (Phase change) Salt in water (Solid into Solution) Sugar in water (Solid into Solution)

7 Justify your choice See handout with various ‘scenarios’
CR = Chemical reaction PP = Physical property PC = Physical change

8 So … what do you think? 3. The melting point of water is 0oC
1. Nickel is a silver color PP 2. Wood is flammable. It burns easily. CR 3. The melting point of water is 0oC 4. Magnesium is a metal, it reacts with acid. 5. A piece of paper is burning.

9 6. Ice tea powder disappears in water
So … what do you think? 6. Ice tea powder disappears in water PC 7. Candle is burning CR 8. Gold is malleable 9. Iron rusts

10 So … what do you think? 10. Sodium will produce hydrogen gas if placed in water CP 11. Vinegar tastes sour CP or PP? 12. A cell phone battery gets really hot CC or CR? 13. Blowing up a balloon, making it bigger PC … why?

11 So … what do you think? 14. Phosphorous burning in air CC or CR
15. Writing on paper with a pencil PC 16. Silver will conduct electricity PP 17. Setting off a firework CR

12 Example: Iron wool and oxygen to make iron oxide, Fe203 (rust!)
Insert video clip here. … Bill Nye? Chem rection of iron wool First 50 seconds Exothermic or endothermic?

13 Example: Hydrogen and oxygen to make water (H20)
Insert video clip here. … Bill Nye? Chem reaction of hydrogen and oxygen From about 50 seconds onwards Exothermic or endothermic?

14 Example: Sodium and chlorine reacting to make … salt, NaCl (sodium chloride)
Insert video clip here. … Bill Nye? Bill Nye the Science Guy®: Chemical Reactions - Video Chem reaction of chlorine and sodium Exothermic or endothermic?

15 End of lesson Slides after this are reference material for the teacher … but you’re welcome to look at them!

16 Physical properties defn (PP)
Physical properties are the characteristics of matter that often can be detected with your senses or measured. They don’t change the matter into something completely different or new. It’s a feature or a descriptor. They are used to identify what matter it is. Chemical properties defn (CP) Chemical properties are the characteristics of matter that describes how it might or might not interact with something else. They can or will change the matter into something completely different or describe how they wont change.

17 Physical properties (PP)
