3 Gettysburg July By July of 1863 the Confederacy is starting to lose its ability to fight, despite its superior military performance The Confederacy invades Pennsylvania in the hope of them attacking Maryland from the North The Union is able to entrench themselves and defeat the Confederacy

4 Grant in the West Ulysses S. Grant wins battle after battle in the west He demands unconditional surrender from all Confederate forces that he attacks He is willing to suffer losses of men to win battles Battle of Vicksburg (July 4th 1863) ensures that the South will not win

5 Sherman’s March William T. Sherman marches through Georgia stealing all valuables from every city that he reaches, burning homes, and destroying railroads Total War- attacking the population or anything that could help your enemy

6 Election of 1864 Lincoln wins a closely contested election
His opponent George McClellan made it clear he would have negotiated peace with the Confederacy

7 Grant Captures Lee Grant captures Richmond and then Lee’s forces at Appomattox court house in Virginia (April 9th 1865) The Confederacy surrenders unconditionally

8 Abraham Lincoln Assassinated
Abraham Lincoln is assassinated April 14th 1865 600,000 men are killed during the war
