Identity Unit Journals

Journal #1 To which groups/clubs do you belong? How do these groups shape your identity? Do you agree with Millicent that “you don’t have to belong to a club to feel related to other human beings”?

JOURNAL #2 Do you agree that others “see us as [they] want to see us…in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions”? Do the labels we put on ourselves and others matter? Do the perceptions that others have of us affect how we perceive ourselves?

Journal #3 How do the expectations that others have of us shape who we are? How do the people in your life communicate these expectations? What happens when you meet these expectations? exceed them? fail to live up to them?

FAVORITE TOY What was your favorite toy as a child? Describe it using all five senses (sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell). How old were you when you received this toy? Why or how did you receive it? What memories do you associate with this toy? Where is it now?

i-Pod Playlist In this journal, you will “create” an i-Pod playlist that represents you. Pick songs that represent important aspects of your life or that remind you of important moments of your life. For each song, include an explanation of the song and why it is included in your mix.

Peaks and Valleys In this journal, you are going to pick one “peak” and one “valley” from the last journal assignment and write about each in more detail. Fully describe the event, explain why it was a “peak” or “valley,” and explain the events significance to you life.
