Thursday, February 5th, 2015
2
Do Now Do Now Complete section for Thursday
Add up your total score for the week
3
Objectives SWBAT describe the law of conservation of energy
SWBAT apply the law of conservation of energy by looking at examples Essential Question What is a scenario that demonstrates the law of conservation of energy?
4
Homework from yesterday
Definition Facts/Characteristics The Law of Conservation of Energy Examples Non-example or Picture
5
James Prescott Joule This is his experiment
His experiment confirmed the conservation of energy
6
The story of the light bulb turning on
There are many ways now that we can receive electrical energy Lets assume we are using coal. Energy cannot be created or destroyed Where does it come from, where does it end? Energy can change forms How does it change?
7
Starts in the sun Nuclear fusion Light energy Chemical energy (photosynthesis) plants dies and store this as carbon Thermal energy (burning coal) Mechanical Energy (move generator) Electrical energy (wires) Light and thermal energy (light bulb) From coal to light
8
Other scenario With your table try to come up with another scenario
Think about where the energy comes from, how it is converted, and where it goes.
9
Answer the Essential Question
What is a scenario that demonstrates the law of conservation of energy? Use a different one from before
10
Exit Ticket Which of the following statements correctly describes the law of conservation of energy? An object always has the same amount of energy. Energy can change between many different forms, such as potential, kinetic, and thermal, but it is ultimately destroyed. The total quantity of energy in the universe never changes, it just changes forms. The fact that you can fuse hydrogen into helium to produce energy means that helium can be turned into hydrogen to produce energy. It is not really possible for an object to gain or lose potential energy, because energy cannot be destroyed.
