KE vs PE Forms of Energy Kinetic Energy (KE) Energy of motions, depends on mass and speed of object KE= ½ mv2 Potential Energy (PE) E stored because of position Gravitational PE depends on height , mass, and acceleration due to gravity PE= mgh Elastic PE Stretch/ compress object and it “springs back” Mechanical- E based on motion and position of an object; Ex bouncing ball Thermal-motion of object’s particles; Ex molten metal Chemical-E stored in chemical bonds; Ex food eat/ gas in car Electrical- E of electrical charges; Ex batteries/ plug Electromagnetic- travels in waves; Ex sun’s rays Nuclear- E stored in nucleus of atom; Ex fission/fusion

Conservation of Energy Energy can be converted from one form to another Most common is when gravitational PE is converted to KE of moving object Pendulums- swing switches KE to PE Pole Vault- KE (running) to elastic PE (pole rises) to gravitational PE (top) to KE (fall) Mechanical energy= KE+PE Law of conservation of Energy- energy cannot be created or destroyed Energy and mass, E=mc2, states that Energy and mass are equivalent/ converted Conservation of Mechanical Energy (KE+PE) beginning = (KE+PE)end
