The setting is accurate in both place and time Historical events affect the plot and are interwoven with imaginary plot events Characters may be actual historic figures. The personalities and behavior of the characters are based on research, but the conversations and thoughts attributed to these figures are the author’s creation.

The setting of a story is the time and place in which events occur. Setting is particularly important in historical fiction. To give readers a sense of the past, writers of historical fiction… • refer to historically significant events • recreate details and customs that help readers see, hear, and smell what life was like at a different time As you read “The Drummer Boy of Shiloh”, an example of historical fiction, notice the details Ray Bradbury uses to capture a Civil War encampment the night before a battle. Consider which of these details may have been customs of that time or place
