1 Making Equivalent Fractions

2 To Make Equivalent Fractions
Multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number. You will get a new fraction with the same value as the original fraction. We are not changing the value of the fraction, because we are simply multiplying by a fraction that is equivalent to ONE.

3 What do you get when you multiply a number by 1?
You get that number! 5 x 1 = 5 7 x 1 = 7 37 x 1 = 37 23 x 1 = 23 17 x 1 = 17

4 All these fractions = 1 7 2 33 4 5 When the numerator &
denominator of a fraction are the same, the fraction equals 1. 33 4 5

5 AN EQUIVALENT FRACTION adding & subtracting fractions
What do you get when you multiply a fraction by 1? You get AN EQUIVALENT FRACTION that makes adding & subtracting fractions possible.

6 These fractions represent the same amount.
x = This fraction equals 1. = These fractions represent the same amount.

7 These fractions represent the same amount.
