3 Introduction Five participants between ages 12 -17:
#1: 12 y/o, Caucasian #2: 13 y/o, Caucasian #3: 14 y/o, Caucasian #4: 17 y/o, Caucasian #5: 18 y/o, African American

4 Goal Statement The purpose of this population assessment is to examine potential risks and the importance of protective factors associated with the onset of eating disorders in adolescent and pre adolescent females. Location of Assessment: Upper Kingston Park Prattville, Alabama

5 1ST Objective Identify the demographic data and health behaviors of the population.

6 2nd Objective Determine any educational barriers that would affect the comprehension of information provided.

7 3rd Objective Assess personal perception of family and/or social support.

8 4th Objective Examine the population’s access to health resources including direct health services and technology use.

11 Factors Affecting Overall Health
Poor eating habits Risky behaviors (multiple sexual partners, substance abuse, violent behavior) Lack of physical activity Environmental influence (family, peer group, school, community characteristics)

12 Strategies for Clinical Prevention
Universal prevention (include all populations of pre-teen and teens) Targeted prevention (individuals demonstrating signs of eating disorders) Become familiar with available resources Enhance self-knowledge of signs and symptoms of eating disorders among teens Provide education to others involved

13 Strategies for Health Promotion
School connectedness- promotes feeling that others care about the individual Parent engagement in school- demonstrates support of children Engagement in Extracurricular Activities- enhance self-perception Positive parental practices- encouragement for making healthy choices and avoiding risky behaviors Education/Awareness- promotes awareness of the individual
