2 Timing Reminder You will be given 2 hours to write 3 essays. You want to budget around 40 minutes for each essay.

3 Overview Passages usually consist of a one- to two- page excerpt from a novel or short story Typically question relates to the author's narrative techniques Question may also pertain to character development, use of language, structure, tone, theme, or other literary elements

4 AP Board’s General Writing Guidelines
Take time to organize your ideas. Make pertinent use of the text given to you to analyze. Quote judiciously from it to support your observations. Be logical in your exposition of ideas.

5 Additional Tip Mark up the text! Underline key words in the prompt
Mark important words that contribute to a passage’s tone and character development Mark words that carry “loaded” meaning—words with particular connotations that are important to the excerpt’s message
