1 The Human Body What is Anatomy? What is Physiology?
The study of the form, or structure of body parts. What is Physiology? The functioning of the body’s structural machinery. Hierarchy of Structural Organization. Atoms > Cells > Tissues > Organs > Systems > Organism

2 Organ Systems Integumentary – skin, hair - protection
Skeletal – protects and supports organs Muscular – allows movement Lymphatic – dispose of debris, houses WBC Immune – protects body Reproductive – to reproduce

3 Organ Systems Respiratory – gas exchange
Nervous – control and responds to external and internal change Endocrine – glands secrete chemicals which regulate body process Cardiovascular – transports blood Digestive – breaks down food, eliminates waste Urinary – eliminates nitrogenous wastes, balance of the blood

4 The language of Anatomy
Anatomical Position – body erect, palms and toes forward. Directional Terms – Table 1-9 (page 15) Superior, inferior Anterior, posterior Medial, lateral, intermediate Proximal, distal Superficial, deep

5 Body Planes and Sections:
Sagittal – longitudinally, divided into left and right portions. Midsagittal – midline Parasagittal – beside Frontal (coronal) logitudinally, divided into anterior and posterior portions. Transverse – horizontally, divided into superior and inferior parts Oblique – intermediate between a horizontal and longitudinal plane.

6 Body Cavities Dorsal – includes cranial and vertebral cavities.
Ventral – includes the thoracic and abdominal pelvic cavities. Oral, Nasal, Orbital, Middle ear, and Synovial cavities.

7 Terminology Serosa – double layer membrane lining cavity walls and organs. Parietal – membrane close to body cavity. Visceral – membrane close to an organ. Pleural – pertaining to the lungs Pericardial – “ “ to the heart Peritoneum – “ “ to the abdominal cavity.

8 Specific Body Regions Figure 1-6 (page 13)
