1 Date: 11/28 – 11/29 Topic: Cardiovascular System Learning Target: Explain how viscosity, exercise and disease affect blood flow through the cardiovascular system.

2 Bell Ringer Write the learning targets for today!
Answer the following questions: 1. What is cellular respiration? 2. What are the products of cellular respiration? 3. What does the graph below indicate about heart disease and age?

3 Average Exit Quiz Scores from Last Class

4 Agenda Bell Ringer (5 minutes) Class announcements (5 minutes) Class discussion (15 minutes) Notebook Output (5 minutes) Group Activity (30 minutes) Independent Practice (15 minutes) Exit Quiz (10 minutes)

5 Unit Focus: The Human Body
-The Human body systems help the body to maintain homeostasis -Homeostasis: The ability to maintain a condition of balance or equilibrium in its internal environment, even when faced with external changes. Ex: body temperature remains≈ 98.6° regardless of outside temp.

6 What is: Blood pressure:
Blood flow: Blood volume: Blood resistance: the force of the blood on the arteries’ walls. the rate at which blood flows through the entire circulatory system volume of blood (red blood cells and plasma) in the circulatory system of any individual. Smoking: smokers are twice as likely to suffer heart attacks as non-smokers, and are more likely to die as a result. It is the nicotine and carbon monoxide in tobacco smoke that causes damage to the cardiovascular system. Alcohol: regularly drinking more than one drink a day for women or more than two drinks a day for men increases the risk of heart disease. This is linked to a rise in blood pressure, obesity, and the effect of heavy drinking on levels of triglycerides in the blood (a type of fat). Binge drinking appears to be particularly dangerous here, even in younger people. A family history of heart disease: if you have parents with heart disease you are more likely to have heart disease yourself. Ethnic origin: some races, such as Afro-Caribbeans and some Asian communities are more prone to coronary heart disease and stroke. High cholesterol levels: cholesterol is a type of fat. The higher the cholesterol level in your blood, the higher the risk of coronary heart disease. When combined with other risk factors like smoking, the risk increases substantially. High blood pressure (hypertension): high blood pressure increases the heart's workload, causing it to enlarge and weaken over time. When combined with obesity, smoking, high cholesterol or diabetes, the risk increases several times. Lack of exercise and obesity: people who are overweight are more likely to develop heart disease. Obesity puts extra strain on the heart, increases blood pressure, raises cholesterol levels and increases the likelihood of developing diabetes – all risk factors for heart disease. Exercise can reduce many of these risks factors, namely cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and weight. the difficulty to flow that must be overcome to push blood through the circulatory system.

7 Cardio- -Vascular Heart disease is the leading cause of deaths in the United States of America! 1 in 4 (25%) African Americans suffer from heart Disease

8 A human heart survives about 4 hours outside of the body, as long as it receives a continuous supply of oxygen.

9 ***Draw the table below in your notebook***
Factor What is it? Effect on Blood Flow Exercise Physical activity, causes heart rate to increase => body needs oxygen for cellular respiration Increase Viscosity Thickness of a liquid High viscosity= decreased (slower) blood flow, increased resistance Disease (artherosclerosis) Disease in which fat and cholesterol deposit on the inside of the blood arteries; likelihood of disease higher as you age Decreased blood flow, increased resistance

10 Notebook Output How does blood flow through the heart? Write at least 5 sentences to explain. Use the following vocabulary words: heart, atrium, ventricle, lungs, pulmonary, systemic, oxygenated, deoxygenated, oxygen, arteries, veins, capillaries, gas exchange

11 Group Work/Independent Practice
Half of you will go to the lab tables and half will do independent practice Complete the activity using the worksheets at your lab tables DO NOT WRITE ON THE WORKSHEETS Write your answers on the white boards Work with urgency!

12 Independent Practice 15 minutes

13 Exit Quiz

14 Homework 1. Copy notes for the following class
2. Answer the following questions: What is the function of the immune system? What are the 3 lines of defense in the immune system?
