3 Purposes of GA’s Charter
Charity - relieve poverty & unemployment Economics - increase Britain’s trade & wealth Defense - provide S.C. with a buffer against Indian attacks Religion – 4th reason Home for people being persecuted in Europe Catholics excluded b/c of the threat of Spanish Florida

Georgia - Trustee Colony
Only colony run by trustees Oglethorpe & 20 others named as trustees Trustees banned from receiving a salary, owning land, or holding public office Official motto - “Not for ourselves but others”

A Great Social Experiment
GA - a model society Strict rules on land & work Colonists carefully selected - hardworking people down on their luck & who had skills to make the colony a success 35 families chosen - no debtors; farmers, carpenters, tailors, & bakers Charity families received land, weapons, tools, seed, & food to feed them until the 1st harvest Colonists in turn had to clear land, raise crops, build houses & public structures, & FOLLOW RULES!
