Question 19
2
Question 19 A cylindrical tank has a height of 10 feet and a radius of 4 feet. Jane fills the tank with water at a rate of 8 cubic feet per minute. At this rate, how many minutes will it take Jane to completely fill the tank without overflowing it? Round your answer to the nearest minute. You can use a calculator on this problem. Similar to problem 18, the students will not be given the formula for the volume of a cylinder. The volume of a cylinder is: V = πr2h. For this problem, the students will find the volume of the cylinder and then divide that by 8, in order to find out how long it will take to fill the tank.

Question 19 Cont V = πr2h r = 4 h = 10 V = (3.14)(4)2(10)
The first thing the students need to do is plug in the radius and height into the equation. When you do that, you get V = 3.14 * 42 * 10 Simplify the 42 by multiplying 4*4 V = 3.14 * 16 * 10 Multiply all of the numbers together V = 502.4 Once you get this value, you only know the total volume of the cylinder. You then need to divide it by 8, and you get Since it is asking you to round it to the nearest minute, that would be 63, since 0.8 makes the number round up. 502.4 8 = 62.8 = 63
