What is pre-tensioning?
A method for concrete to overcome its weakness, which is tension. This method can be applied to beams, floor or bridges with a longer span than is practical with ordinary reinforced concrete.

How is it utilized? The tendons are tensioned against some abutments then put into put in concrete resists it from going back to normal size and is done usually with precast for it to be stronger and wont crack or break easily. This helps the concrete for buildings walls and floor that will be dealing lots of damage.

Purpose of material? The purpose of pre-tensioning the tendons for the precast is for the concrete to become stronger and deal more damage: this allows for the walls and floors to carry more weight

Common length and weight?
residential post-tensioned concrete slab will typically be 8 inches thick and use 3000 psi concrete. Once the concrete has gained strength to 2000 psi, typically within the 3 to 10 days recommended by PTI, the tendons are stressed. Tendons today are seven high-strength steel wires wound together and placed inside a plastic duct. At each end a PT anchor is located and these are located in pockets embedded into the slab edge. When the strands are stressed, the wires will stretch—about 4 inches for a 50 foot strand—to apply 33,000 pounds of load
