1 Nutrition and Physical Fitness

2 Maintaining a Healthy Weight
Metabolism is the process by which your body gets energy from food. Body Mass Index (BMI) is a ratio that allows you to assess your body size in relation to your height and weight. BMI = weight (in lbs.) / height 2 (in inches) x 703 . Overweight is a condition in which a person is heavier than the standard weight range for his or her height. Obese is having an excess amount of body fat. Underweight is a condition in which a person is less than the standard weight range for his or her height.

3 BMI = weight (in lbs.) / height 2 (in inches) x 703.

4 Five Elements of Physical Fitness
Cardiorespiratory Endurance is how efficient the heart and lungs work together (i.e. jogging, swimming, cycling). Muscular Strength is how hard the muscles can work (i.e. lifting heavy weight). Muscular Endurance is how long the muscles can work (i.e. lifting weight with multiple repetitions). Flexibility is using joints at full range of motion (i.e. stretching, yoga). Body Composition is the ratio of fat to lean tissue in your body. Anaerobic Exercise involves short bursts of activity in which the muscles work so hard that they produce energy without using oxygen (i.e. running 100 yard dash or lifting weights). Aerobic Exercise is any activity that uses large muscle groups, is rhythmic in nature, and can be maintained continuously for an extended period of time (i.e. running, cycling, swimming).

5 Blood Pressure Blood Pressure is a measure of the amount of force the body places on the walls of blood vessels, particularly large arteries as it is pumped through the body. Diastolic Blood Pressure is the pressure at its lowest point when the ventricles of the heart relax. Systolic Pressure is the maximum pressure as your heart contracts to push blood through the body. A person’s healthy blood pressure will vary within a normal range that is between /60-90.
