Start-Up - Writing In your own words, tell me what you think is the theme of the play. Remember, theme is what the author is trying to convey — in other words, the central idea of the story.

Back to the Poetry You have back, now, the poems that you started with. (If you never completed this assignment, check your folder. If you have no poem to work with, let me know and I will assign you one after I have finished giving instructions.) Take a moment to re-read the poem you started with and look, again, at your answer to the question on the theme of the poem.

The Assignment You will be writing, today and tomorrow, a paper that compares the poem you are holding with the play we just read. The logistics: Your paper must be in MLA Format (use the template on my webpage) Your paper must be at least 3-5 paragraphs and no less than one full page (12 point Times New Roman font). You must CITE any use of the poem and the play! Author and line number for the poem Author and page number for the play DO NOT USE ANY OUTSIDE SOURCES! USE ONLY THE POEM AND THE PLAY!

The Prompt Looking at the poem you analyzed before we began reading the play, write about the following: First, compare the theme of the poem to the theme of the play. How are they connected? Why do you think that poem was chosen to be read before the play? Second, choose ONE character from the play who you think best represents the ideas/theme of the play. Describe that character and how that character’s story shows the theme of the play. Give at least 2 or 3 examples involving that character that illustrate the play’s theme. Third, Using the SAME character, discuss how their story shows the theme of the poem. Give at least 2 or 3 examples from the play that illustrate the poem’s theme.

The Bottom Line You have today and tomorrow in class to work on this writing. Any papers edited after MIDNIGHT TOMORROW NIGHT will be considered late and will have points deducted.
