Current opportunities & benefits into the future
In 2007, following the election of the Rudd Labor Government, an allocation of ~$10M was made by the Commonwealth to a partnership led by NAILSMA to develop a Savanna Burning greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions abatement accounting methodology
As at March 2018, there were 25 Indigenous Savanna Burning projects operating on 180,300 km2 of northern Australia, currently generating at least ~$15M annually for Indigenous Ranger Groups and local communities.
To help address the regional land use, social, and economic issues and opportunities outlined above, we seek support from an incoming Labor Federal Government to fund a NAILSMA-led partnership in a similar manner to that initiated previously by the Rudd Labor Government. Based on our extensive experience in developing above detailed CRC-DNA and MLA-LPP proposals, we have identified that ~$12.5M over 5 years is required to address the following core activities:
- Finalise development of Savanna Burning sequestration methods, for inclusion and implementation in Australia’s formal carbon market
- Design and develop appropriate condition metrics, and cost-effective monitoring tools, for ecosystem services market instruments focusing on biodiversity, water quality, land condition
- In collaboration with regional land sector and project partners, undertake foundational research to:
1. Develop and establish new ecosystem services markets
2. Undertake detailed economic assessment of the value proposition of diversified land use and market opportunities for the northern land sector, and broader benefits to society
3. Assess the implications of different tenure arrangements across the northern jurisdictions, including: the undertaking of diversified land use activities especially on leasehold properties, and potential barriers to the undertaking of carbon sequestration projects in some jurisdictions
- Implement hands-on case study activities in each of the three northern jurisdictions to demonstrate and assess new income opportunities which can assist with economically diversifying, and enhancing the long-term sustainability (environmental, social, economic) of, different land sector enterprise options.
