Remember to date the page!!!!!! The reason we’re using this chart is because we need to see how our theme is sustained (or repeated) throughout the text.” The “Where I’ve Seen This Before” part connects to a place in the text that you’ve seen proof for your particular theme statement.

Pick a theme statement/WRITE THE ONE YOU CHOOSE DOWN
Leadership: To be a strong leader, one must be able to motivate and encourage his/her followers. Strength: Mental strength is ultimately more powerful than physical strength (Brains over brawn). Temptation: Giving into temptation can lead one into dangerous situations. Identity: One’s identity is created by themselves, not by outside forces. Loyalty: Loyalty to the family is more important than friendship.

I Do Read pg line 716 to pg line 843 Be on the look out for instances of the theme statement you chose
10
I-Do Write down 1 example from the text in your chart that supports the theme statement you selected 10 minutes
11
Chart Example Cite Evidence Explain = How it connects to the theme
Where else have you seen this theme in the story? Circe makes the prophecy that if Odysseus and his crew “raid the beeves, [there will be] destruction for his ship and crew” ( ). We know from “Sing in Me, Muse” that Odysseus’ crew does in fact get killed by the Sun God and it has been our experience so far with Greek mythology that prophecies always come true (see Helen and Paris). -Polyphemus’ prophecy comes true
12
I-Do - Pull the Thread Now go back through The Odyssey and find 4 more connections to your theme Log them in your chart 20 minutes “So, you’re going back through the text and finding instances where your particular theme appears. For instance, my theme statement I wrote about fate shows up here (choose place from text). That means I will log it in my chart and draw an arrow between the selections, showing their connection. Remember, the theme of a text shows up throughout the entire text. That’s why it’s important to go back and find your specific theme to make sure if it really is a theme.”
