What are we doing today? Learning intent:
Discover the themes of WALL-E in relation to lessons taught about overconsumption and waste Learn what both biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes are Use the who/what, when, where, why, how questions for analysis Success criteria – You will understand the how the themes of over- consumption and waste are forgrounded in the movie WALL-E. You will be able discuss the disadvantages of waste, the advantages of recycling Reason for learning – This unit is about how films that promote sustainability to children can position/influence them to view pollution or deforestation (for example) as bad.

Popular kids movies and their morals How do kids movies position children Why is it important that children are positioned to view environmental issues and sustainability as important? Watch WALL-E Comprehension – themes and how they teach lessons about pollution Significant question 2 What lessons are taught through plot themes and characters? Themes, plot, characters, visual literacy elements of film Close study of a couple of scenes Story board comprehension activity of the movie and where the themes, morals etc are clearly evident Discussion about lack of dialogue but still able to understand the film’s intention – visual literacy skills again Hand out task Significant question 3 What is the purpose of a movie review? Deconstruct task – what is a movie review? What does it look like? What are the elements of language that we need to use to prepare a movie review (a) describe (b) explain (c) evaluate What are the sentence patterns and punctuation appropriate for the movie review (describe, explain, evaluate) Model a review – I do, We do, You do Write own review in class time by end of week 6 Week 8 Tues and Wed RETREAT DAYS REVIEW is due beginning of week 8 WEEK 7 – draft reviews WEEK 8 – explicit teaching of oral presentation skills Use of palm cards Articulation and pronunciation Film self and complete evaluation of presentation – identify two elements of presentation that are ok and two that need work. Discuss strategies on how to improve these with teacher/peer Practise using palm cards Learn how to memorise speech Movie review Presentations Catch up and presentation of review

Homework - Recycling Tonight I want you to go home and find something in your local environment that can, is or should be recycled; it might be around your house or yard or maybe out on your street or down the road in the park. I want you to take a picture of it or draw it and label it. Once you have done that I want you to use the 5W&H analysis strategy to find out information about it. Record your analysis on the same page as your photo/drawing. DUE next English lesson
