SMART goal setting Specific- “Getting better at Football” is too general, needs to be specific to you and focused on a particular aspect of your performance Measureable- Targets need to be measureable so you can see if you have improved. Achievable- A task that is challenging yet achievable will keep you motivated. Not setting a target you are never going to be able to achieve e.g. Taking 1 second off my 100m PB Realistic- Making sure you have the resources available to you to complete the task. You need to feel you can achieve it so you are motived to work hard Time-Bound- Giving a specific target date to ensure you work towards it and don’t lose motivation

Task Can you write a SMARTER goal for you in relation to… Your favourite Sport Your progress at School

Setting targets This will link to your PEP (Personal Exercise Programme) which you will complete for GCSE PE… - Set appropriate SMART targets - Justify your SMART targets - Evaluate whether you met your SMART targets My current 50m Breaststroke time is 56 seconds and I currently train twice a week My goal is to complete a 50m breaststroke swim in 53 seconds in the next 3 months Specific Realistic Measureable Achievable Time Bound

Reviewing targets Provided that targets are measureable it is possible to monitor progress. Not always so straight forward as is there always something to measure? How can you measure progress in football? How can you measure progress in gymnastics? Progress needs to be reviewed to know if… Performance is improving towards your goal Goal has been achieved and therefore a new one set You need to amend an existing goal
