What is Gangrene? Gangrene is a condition that occurs when body tissue dies. Fingers, toes, and limbs are most often affected, but gangrene can also occur inside the body, damaging the organs and muscles.
3
What causes Gangrene? Caused by a loss of blood supply due to an underlying illness, injury, or infection. Any condition that affects blood flow increases your risk of gangrene Gangrene is contagious because it can spread poor infection, such as bacteria being passed from patient to patient. It affects more on males than females. Conditions such as: Diabetes Smoking Trauma or serious injury Obesity Weakened immune system
4
Two Main of types of Gangrene
Dry Gangrene: develops when blood flow to the affected area is impaired, usually as a result of poor circulation. Wet Gangrene: Tissues are dead making it swell and blister up, which is why it is called "wet" because of the pus.
5
Types of wet Gangrene include:
Internal Gangrene: if gangrene occurs inside the body due to blocked blood flow to an internal organ Gas Gangrene: occurs when infection develops deep inside the body Fournier's Gangrene: caused by an infection in the genital area
6
What does the immune system play in the sickness?
The immune system fights the infected area and try's to maintain a good blood circulation The first line of defense would be white blood cells Second line of defense phagocytic cells that destroys all microbes that pass into body tissues Humoral: secreted antibodies complement proteins to keep good blood flow Cell-mediated: CD4 or helper T cells provides protection against infections
7
Role of the lymphatic system
The roles of lymphatic system in gangrene is keeping healthy tissues and maintaining blood circulation. Your risk of gangrene, you are more likely to develop this condition if you have lowered immunity because of medical condition or cancer treatment.
8
Symptoms Dry and shriveled skin that changes color from blue to black and eventually sloughs off Cold and numb skin Pain may or not be present Swelling and pain at the site of infection Blisters or sores that produce pus Sickness Crackling noise when pressed
9
Treatments Surgery: the dead tissue is surgically removed to prevent the spread of infection Maggot therapy: they consume the dead and infected tissue without harming healthy tissue. Oxygen therapy: the patient is put in a specially designed chamb er filled with oxygen at a higher pressure than oxygen found in the outside air
10
Continuation... Surgery – It enhances the abilities of the immune system to protect healthy tissues. Maggots - It enhances the abilities of the immune system by helping to fight infections and speed up healing by releasing substances that kill bacteria. Oxygen - oxygen therapy enhances the abilities of the immune system by reducing the growth of bacteria that cannot thrive in an oxygen rich environment.
11
Cure? The only cure that there is, is to prevent it from happening. There are some home remedies you can use such as: Protein Vegetable Olive leaf extract Zell oxygen Cabbage leaf dressing The only cures that doctors have found are the treatments.

Fun Facts Gangrene is often combined in patients with diabetes
Can also be in association with an underlying cancer In the U.S. , approximately 50%$ of most gangrene eases are the result of asevere traumatic injury 40% occur following surgery Gangrene becomes changing in color to brown then to black.
14
How can gangrene be treated?
